“What You Need to Know Before Starting to Work At Home” (Part 2)
Planning is an essential element of any complex operation. Even a small work at home business has a large number of elements that make it a more complex undertaking than the run-of-the-mill activities we do everyday. These elements require proper organisation. A business plan can serve two important purposes (among others): bring a dose of realism to your thinking before you start down this path, and provide a conceptual framework that will guide you in the way you organise your business.
A small business plan usually starts with an executive summary, although you will not be able to complete the summary until the body of the business plan has been completed. The main introduction that follows will address key issues such as the type of business, its goals, legal structure, skills and experience of the owner (you), and competitive advantage.
The next section will address marketing issues such as the type of products or services, characteristics of the market, pricing strategies if relevant, and marketing methods.
The critical financial section follows, which describes how your business will be funded, and what records will be kept so as to track the progress of your business. Typically, the records that you keep will need to comply with taxation laws in your state and country. Financial projections need to include at least a simple budget, and should also incorporate break even analysis.
It is most important that you know your basic or fixed cost level. No business can run without some level of basic fixed costs. These are costs like internet providers, telephone service, and electricity. These costs have variable elements, but there will be some minimum cost level just for access.
You will need to include a section on operations. This will provide information on the the process of daily management, provision of any equipment and services, management of outsourcing, customer service, ecommerce providers, website hosting, and various other operational issues depending on your business type.
This is a very broad overview of the elements a business plan. A search of Google or other search engines will give access to plenty of free templates that you can modify for your purposes. Do not overlook the importance of preparing a proper plan before you start your work at home business.
