“Do You Have What It Takes to Work at Home?”
It may be an unpalatable truth, but I wonder how many people who have spent their lives as employees of someone else are really equipped to suddenly become “self-employed”. Work at Home opportunities are so often sold as the key to a fabulous new lifestyle, and indeed they can be. But the experience of many self-employed people over the years is that they have gone from working well-defined if sometimes long hours for someone else to working almost non-stop for themselves in a desperate, chaotic struggle to get a small business up and running. Yes, they are “free” in a manner of speaking, but they have only become an employee of a different kind.
I’m not talking about someone doing some additional part-time work at home. I am talking about the dream of financial independence that is often a key element in the promotion of work at opportunities. The danger is that the dream will turn into a nightmare if certain critical skills are missing. Those critical skills are those that are needed to build and manage a business. Because if you are going to be successful working at home you must treat your venture as a business, not as a hobby. Now, you can be sure that any ebook that you buy that purports to tell you how to make money will not tell you anything about how to develop business skills. At least, I have yet to find one that even touches on the need for business skills.
Ask yourself, what do you know about business skills like time management, financial management, taxation issues, project management, outsourcing, legal issues, and the list goes on? Understand that achieving financial independence by working at home will take a lot more than the purchase of the latest $97 ebook.
It is not my intention to dissuade you from pursuing your dreams, in fact quite to the contrary. But you need to properly prepare yourself for the path ahead. In my next post I will discuss what you can do to better prepare yourself for your bold new venture.
