Forget what you may read in the never-ending flood of sales letters and emails promoting the latest great money-making idea. Affiliate Marketing using Pay Per Click is by far the most effective way for anyone to start making decent amounts of money online instantly. Nothing else comes close.

There are dangers in the use of this method of course, that I discuss elsewhere. But I have been asking myself recently: if I was restricted to recommending only one guide or course to a newcomer, what would it be?

The big names in PPC are Perry Marshall’s “Definitive Guide to Google Adwords”, Chris Carpenter’s Google Cash 3rd Edition, Kyle and Carson’s Beating Adwords and Chris McNeeney’s trilogy Adwords Miracle, Affiliate Project X, and Day Job Killer. These are excellent and recommended works.

But when I reviewed all of these, and considered which one, and only one, that I would recommend to newcomers as the best all-round guide, the answer rather surprised me. It’s unquestionably Chris Carpenter’s Google Cash 3rd Edition, and here’s why.

Remember, we are specifically discussing affiliate marketing with PPC here. The “Definitive Guide to Google Adwords”, good as it is, is not specifically directed to affiliate marketing, but is aimed at all users of Google Adwords for any type of marketing. So I don’t consider it to be the optimum stand alone guide.

Affiliate Project X, and Day Job Killer are aimed at more advanced users of Google Adwords, and don’t cover the basics, so once again they are not suitable as stand alone guides.

So it comes down to a comparison between Google Cash 3rd Edition, Beating Adwords and Adwords Miracle. And in my opinion, Google Cash 3rd Edition wins hands down. Its 201 pages provide the most detailed step by step instruction to affiliate marketing success with PPC that I have seen. It backs up the written word with excellent videos. It provides a better group of bonus materials than the other two. It also covers some very important affiliate concepts like CPA which are not included in the other guides. And most importantly, it really emphasises and covers in detail the importance of an unrelenting commitment to testing and tracking every element of PPC campaigns.

You will discover, if you are successful, that testing and tracking is the real secret to PPC success. It’s simply a numbers game.

So here’s my conclusion, and some advice, born of real tough experience. Buy Google Cash 3rd Edition. Study it, master its techniques. When you prove that you can make money with the Google Cash 3rd Edition techniques, then, and only then, you can consider expanding your education with other ebooks and courses. But, if you can’t make money with Google Cash 3rd Edition, I am sorry to say I think you are just fooling yourself, and wasting your money, if you think that buying all these other products will somehow magically transform your results.

I really wish I had known this when I first started out. It would have saved me thousands of wasted dollars.

I’ve said a few times before that the Work At Home industry is plagued with hype. So many items like courses and software that I have purchased myself which sounded brilliant in the sales letter turned out to be old ideas in a new package, or information readily available for free, or information just not worth the money I’ve paid. It’s a fact that when you pull out your credit card you are not really buying a product, you are buying the blurb in the sales letter. More often than not the product doesn’t live up to the hype.

So I’ve learnt to be cautious about the constant flood of new products. But don’t get me wrong. If you want to make money working at home the surest way to do so is to pay an expert to teach you how. In fact, for most of us, paying for information is the only realistic way to start making money fairly quickly. However, I spent thousands of dollars on all sorts of ebooks and internet marketing courses before I found the really useful money making information. If I had known what I know now when I started I would have purchased probably two or three internet marketing courses and the same number of ebooks. The all up cost would have been less than $3000. It’s still a lot of money for many people.

Now, my favourite way of making money at home is affiliate marketing using pay per click and Google Adwords. In my opinion affiliate marketing is by far the best and most powerful way to start making money at home. But at the same time, affiliate marketing is not easy, and I showed some of the reasons why in previous posts. So the newbie most definitely needs a guide. If I was making a recommendation to anyone just starting out, I would advise buying the best Google Adwords and affiliate marketing ebooks that are available.

In my opinion, there are three outstanding ebooks available: Beating Adwords, Adwords Miracle and Project X. There are a few other good ones, but the three I just mentioned cover everything available in any of the others and more.

OK, listen carefully! I mentioned the amount of hype that surrounds most of the new product releases, so it is no surprise that a new Google Adwords/Affiliate Marketing ebook has just been released which is being hyped up in the usual way. It’s name is Day Job Killer, and if you believe the hype it’s the answer to every affiliate marketer’s dream. Hmm, where have I heard that before? Another one to treat with scepticism, if not downright derision.

Except for one small detail! The author of Day Job Killer is Chris McNeeney, the same guy who produced Adwords Miracle and Project X. This is the guy who went from zero to earning over a $1,000,000 per year from affiliate marketing in eighteen months. (Yes, you read it right, One Million United States Dollars per year!).

I own all his work, and it’s outstanding, cutting edge stuff. I use his techniques everyday. I very strongly recommend all his ebooks to you, and Day Job Killer takes affilliate marketing with Google Adwords to new levels. This is not beginner’s stuff, it’s very advanced, and you’d be better to start off with Adwords Miracle if you’re a beginner. Next day, or maybe later if you’ve had some distractions, you check in on your affiliate account, but are very disappointed to find there are no sales. Then you log into your Adwords account, where you are horrified to find that you have scored hundreds or even thousands of clicks, and now you have a bill from Google for many hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

The problem is that popular untargeted keywords can generate huge amounts of almost worthless traffic. Furthermore, Google’s own traffic estimates are often very inaccurate. Then, these popular keywords are often very competitive, so Google will recommend very high bids in order to get good position. Furthermore, they will recommend a large daily budget to suit. Suddenly you have masses of traffic at a very high cost per click and nothing to show for it.

It may sound apocryphal, but it happens. Be warned: PPC need some expertise, especially Google Adwords.

The truth is that I love PPC. It suits my circumstances, my professional training, and my temperament. In the right hands it is an amazing marketing tool. Nothing beats PPC for instant sales results. But I think it is only responsible to warn anyone who has been sucked in by the latest hot sales page to be careful. PPC can really hurt you if you are unprepared.

But what concerns me is that every sales letter I’ve seen extols the virtues of PPC without any reference to the dangers of using this method, especially for newbies on a limited budget. Yes, the dangers of PPC! Every PPC promotion should come with a health warning, something like this: Warning: PPC can destroy inexperienced users financially if used incorrectly.

You’ve no doubt heard the stories and read the testimonials of people who have had great success with PPC almost as soon as they started using it. Don’t be misled by these testimonials. Statistically it is normal that a small percentage of the population of PPC will have spectacular success through sheer good luck. Equally, a small percentage of PPC users will crash and burn. Most PPC users will fall somewhere in between. It’s what’s referred to in statistics as a normal distribution.

The first critical secret of PPC that you need to know is that you need a significant budget to succeed with PPC. Remember, we are talking about normal people, not the very lucky or exceptionally clever minority.

Let’s say you are targeting an income (profit) of $100 per day, or $3000 per month, using PPC and affiliate marketing. Now, if you have a very well set up campaign with a good converting product, you might expect a return of $2 for every $1 spent. That means that to achieve your income target of $3000 you need to spend $3000 on PPC:

PPC Spending __$3,000

Sales _________$6,000 ($2 earned for every $1 spent)

Profit _________$3,000 (Sales minus PPC Spending)

Notice I said “a well set up campaign”. I am also assuming a good converting product. It’s debatable how many people achieve these kinds of conversion numbers, especially newbies.

It gets worse than that. Typically you must pay for your PPC campaigns in advance, although Google Adwords allows you some credit. But most affiliate companies use a 30 day payment cycle, and they pay by bank check. Some, like Amazon, may use a 60 or 90 day cycle. A rare exception is Clickbank, which pays twice monthly. So while you need to spend your PPC dollars immediately, you will not get any return until sometime the following month. So typically you might not get paid for another 30 days after the end of the month in which you actually earned your income.

This effectively means that you need to budget for two months of PPC advertising. In our example that is an initial budget of $6,000.

You can do the numbers for your own situation, based on what you want to achieve. But to put this in perspective: when some guru claims that they made, say, one million dollars profit with PPC and affiliate marketing, it’s very likely that they spent somewhere near one million dollars in PPC advertising. A very sobering consideration, I think you’ll agree!

So those people who claim that all paid survey sites are scams are misinformed. Some survey sites may indeed be scams, but there are scams in all industries. The better survey sites have been in business for a long time, and for good reason. They perform, and they keep their members happy.

“Can you make money with paid surveys?” Emphatically, yes! However, paid surveys are not going to make you rich. They are a way to earn some extra cash, and if you work at it, quite a lot of cash. But don’t expect more than that. They are very useful for anyone starting out with a work at home business that needs some extra cash flow while getting other more potentially lucrative areas of their business up to speed. And paid surveys are great for anyone who needs a simple easy way to get extra cash for any purpose. So as long as you understand the nature and limitations of paid surveys they really can be a great source of extra income. However, do stick with the more popular proven membership sites, like SurveyScout, and you can’t go wrong.

The next section will address marketing issues such as the type of products or services, characteristics of the market, pricing strategies if relevant, and marketing methods.

The critical financial section follows, which describes how your business will be funded, and what records will be kept so as to track the progress of your business. Typically, the records that you keep will need to comply with taxation laws in your state and country. Financial projections need to include at least a simple budget, and should also incorporate break even analysis.

It is most important that you know your basic or fixed cost level. No business can run without some level of basic fixed costs. These are costs like internet providers, telephone service, and electricity. These costs have variable elements, but there will be some minimum cost level just for access.

You will need to include a section on operations. This will provide information on the the process of daily management, provision of any equipment and services, management of outsourcing, customer service, ecommerce providers, website hosting, and various other operational issues depending on your business type.

This is a very broad overview of the elements a business plan. A search of Google or other search engines will give access to plenty of free templates that you can modify for your purposes. Do not overlook the importance of preparing a proper plan before you start your work at home business.

Remember to be conservative in your projections. The Work At Home Industry is notoriously over-hyped. Frankly, it is very unlikely you will get anywhere near the results claimed in most sales letters.

You will find that there are business plan formats readily available free on a number of websites, including those of government small business departments. The formats are generally fairly similar, because the experience of millions of small businesses over many years has proven what business plan format works.

Do not fail to take this step before you proceed any further. It really is critical to your success! I will add more comments in my next post.

So don’t rush into the first opportunity that appeals to you. Remember that what you read is a sales letter designed to catch your attention. It is not the actual product. You will often find that the actual product is nothing like what the sales letter appears to be offering. You must do your research. Analyse your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you don’t like cold calling on the telephone you will not want to get involved in building a down-line based on a system of telephoning leads. If your computer skills are poor you will very likely want to avoid anything that requires you to use HTML.

Put simply, you are setting yourself up for failure at the very beginning if you commit to something that doesn’t suit your personality and skills. You will have an awful lot to learn anyway. Don’t make it needlessly hard for yourself.

My point is that you must expect to work for what you get. For example, I mentioned in a previous post that paid surveys are a good, simple way to make money at home, and that’s absolutely true. But it’s not all that much different to having a job, because you get paid per survey, or per hour, as the case may be. So you have got to put in the time and effort to make it work. The big upside is of course, as I said, that you are in control of your own activity. You are not wasting time commuting to work, and being tied rigidly to standard working hours, under the direction of a boss you may not like.

The fact is that it is possible to make a decent income working from home, and with a lot of work and skill you just might get rich. But don’t expect a free ride.
